Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp welcomes all players and their families to our 2012 season. Since 1988, Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp has excelled to offer hockey development to players of all ages and playing levels. Following tradition, we are pleased to host camps in Ignace, ON in July. Players have the option to "sleep-away" at our Resident Camp or enjoy a family vacation getaway in the heart of Sunset Country. The MTS Iceplex, in Winnipeg, MB, is the year-round home facility for Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp programming. There are programs for all ages and interest levels in the summer, fall and winter.
Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp invites you to check out our programming format; the progressive nature will surely offer something for every player within your family. As well, through the two camp locations we hope to offer each family the perfect hockey “Experience of a Lifetime!”
Larry Bumstead, Director
Larry’s ultimate goal is to give each player the opportunity to fully develop to go to the next level. After a long and successful playing career at numerous levels, Larry’s passion for the game of hockey naturally led him to the coaching ranks. Larry is a Hockey Canada certified coach with nearly 25 years of hockey development and coaching experience at many levels within minor hockey, including college with the University of Manitoba Bison Men. He has enjoyed a close working relationship with many provincial Junior and North American Junior A hockey clubs during their evaluation and regular seasons. He is currently head coach for the St. Mary's Academy AAA Prep hockey team and serves as the Head Instructor / Manager of Instructional Programming at the MTS Iceplex.
Larry founded Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp in 1988 and as the director, Larry expanded programming to includedevelopment opportunities for all playing leveles. The Northwestern familiy of programs includes summer day camps, specialty camps for Junior and AAA players, comprehensive and dedicated female programs, and in-season winter training academies. Additionally, Larry created the Boys of the North Prospects Camp for many elite players from throughout North America to attend the camp and showcase their talents for numerous Canadian and American Junior A teams. As a result each spring, Larry assembles and coaches the Boys of the North and the Girls of the North teams to further their development through a structured program of onice skills and off-ice conditioning that culminates in elite hockey tournaments. As a direct result of his mentorship and programs, Larry has proudly watched many of his young players go on to realize their own hockey goals at the highest levels.
Larry continues to remember and respect his roots and regularly returns to Northwestern Ontario to offer development opportunities to the players throughout the region. Larry has a great love for the outdoors and is an avid fisherman. He shares this passion with the many guests of Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp – “the Experience of a Lifetime”. During Winnipeg winters, when he is not coaching or running a camp, Larry and wife Kathy spend their time as many Winnipeg hockey parents do - by transporting to and supporting and cheering their three children at various rinks around the city.
Goaltender Development within Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp is an integrated program. The goaltenders follow the same format as the skaters but recieve dedicated instruction from our goalie staff. Northwestern is pleased to work with Brent Zelenewich, ICELAB at the MTS Iceplex, and the Icelab staff to provide a high quality, tactical approach to goaltender programming at all our camps. Brent and his staff will be on the ice for all programs working in small group ratio with our goalies. Drills will be goalie specific and integrated into team flow drills, reinforcing skill development.
